Forum@535: What Sports Can Teach Us About Business

Winning Teams Have More in Common Than You Think

What does it take to build a winning team? Whether you’re running a business or competing on the field, the answers have a lot in common.

Ahead of the November 12 Forum@535, Seth Allen of Arrowhead Consulting Group and Freddie Vargas Jr. of Tater Baseball joined FOX61’s Jim Altman at Rebellion Group’s Cheshire headquarters to discuss how sports can help business leaders think differently about leadership, culture, talent development, and growth.

For Allen, success starts with the people you bring onto your team and how you help them perform at their best. Coaching, mentoring, and retaining top talent are challenges that business executives and athletic leaders share.

“How they coach their employees, how they mentor their employees, and how they help them become their best selves,” Allen said, describing some of the practices he hopes to explore during the event.

Vargas brings firsthand experience building a growing Connecticut sports business. His company, Tater Baseball, continues to expand its products and capabilities, including plans for a new bat lab that will use high-speed cameras and other technology to help athletes improve their performance.

But for Vargas, one of the biggest benefits of Forum@535 is the opportunity to connect with other leaders facing similar challenges.

“We all deal with similar problems and how we can tackle them and how we can be forward-thinking on how things change in the future,” he said.

That’s exactly what Forum@535 is designed to encourage: candid conversations among Connecticut’s business owners, entrepreneurs, and executives about the decisions, challenges, and opportunities that shape successful organizations.

Because whether you’re building a business or a championship team, there’s always something to learn from the people who’ve been there.
